About five years ago I was using Panda Antivirus but now I am using Avast and it protects my PC from harmful viruses. So it is the best Antivirus.

If you want to go for a free anti virus software, try out Avira. It is light on system resources and provide good protection.
Avast is also a good option.
And among paid anti virus, I would recommend Kaspersky or Norton.

Norton and McAffee are by far the best in my opinion. As for free anti-virus software, I would say AVG and Avast are very good.

It mainly depends on your usage and to some extent on your personal preference as well. Like I've been using Avira for the last few years and quite satisfied with it.
Other options are kaspersky, norton, avast, avg etc.

Well, the selection of anti virus (according to me) depends on many factors like:
-Internet usage -Whether you need a third party firewall or not -Free or paid
As far as I'm concerned, I'm quite happy with a free anti virus and windows 7 built in firewall.
In my old machine, I had comodo firewall (free) installed with a free anti virus Avira in Windows XP. But in case of Windows 7, I've heard that its firewall is quite good, so I've only installed a free anti virus and on-demand malwarebytes anti malware.
