Yeah, has to be the Beatles. Though, if your looking for consistency over a long period of time, then Im afraid you are indeed staring into Bono's shades mate.

No way is it U2. f****** hell. They're so mediocre, I don't get what the deal is. They've probably had 4 BRILLIANT songs which could reach to anyway, but for the length of time they've been going, I would expect more than that. Has to be The Beatles.

Everyones said the beatles so far, because they clearly were. But in all fairness, how many bands/artists have stayed at the very top as long as U2? By the way, calling U2 "average" is a wee bit mental I must say.

Their songs, for the most part, are average. People get swept up in their music because it's U2, but if any semi popular band brought out any of their recent stuff would get nowhere NEAR the amount of recognition they do. Same goes for Madonna.

LOL - you CANNOT compare Madonna to U2! She was at the top, now shes in the middle. These guys, like 'em or loath him (personally Im somewhere in between) have been at the very top for 20 years, its crazy.

Yeh they have been at the top for 20 years, but because people get swept up in the idea of U2. People will buy their albums and singles before they've even heard them, just because it's U2. It's easier to stay at the top when you've got a massive fan base. And surely the best band should be rated on their music. Who cares how many records U2 have sold (for the reason above)... their songs, for the most part, wouldn't be good enough to make a Beatles B side.

Sure, The Beatles were great. Though, no one can argue that Led Zeppelin wern't far superior in creativity.

I neither love nor dislike U2 but I agree that there aren't many, if any, bands that have been at the top of their game for 20 years and still producing good stuff. Consistency is very difficult in the music world, as in football.

They're top because of "loyal fans", yeah right. Music fans are as fickle as footie fans. As soon as U2 let the standard slip to a certain level, their popularity will plummet. Granted, there not as good nowadays as they were in the 80s, but they're still right up there as always. They're not particularly my personal preference, I dont have any of their albums or anything, but I wouldnt for a second doubt their musical ability.

I'm not saying that they're where they are because of loyal fans... but that if any other band brought any song from their last album, there's no way on earth it would even get in to the top 10. They're not as good as their record sales would suggest. They're nowhere NEAR their best in terms of the music they're producing... but I'm sure there's no much difference in sales between now and when they were at their best.

I like Greenday; they’ve been going over twelve years. Cold play are apparently becoming the best, and the best at the moment are Red Hot Chillis, according to some poll thing I quickly glanced a bit back. The Offspring, Metallica, just a couple of bands that have been around for some time and are still around today. Though of all time, it would have to be the Beatles. Oh and I hate U2, apart from a couple of songs.

You can't statistcally prove who the greatest ever band were. Maybe the Beatles sold more albums, but they were marketed more, Led Zeppelin didn't do publicity stuff that was another thing that made them great. If it weren't for Led Zeppelin modern music would be completely different, guitar solo's may not even exist

No one in the music industry would deny that the most creative band EVER were Led Zeppelin, no matter what their preferred genre. I think it was SWP who said you don't class a great band by their fan base or how many records they sell, but by the music they play, in which case it would be Led Zepp over the Beatles any day. Its not a reflection on musical taste, if it was then I would say Greenday, as personally they are my fav band of all time. Led Zeppelin didn't allow the market to drive their creativity like the Beatles, instead, and as a result, their creativity drove the market. The combination of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant is indeed comparable to that of Paul and John in the Beatles, they were both brilliant songwriter doubles, but John and Paul's Comparatively simple rock and roll structure and basic similarity to each other in terms of using major and minor chord progressions, simple and basic rock and roll rhythms, and verse/chorus/bridge approach defines them as being less innovative when compared to Robert and Jimmy. Led Zeppelin were stage players, they had the ability of great improvisation, where as the Beatles played chord for chord. In no way am I denying that The Beatles were not amazing musicians, but that where their musical talents were from another planet, Led Zepp's were from an entirely different galaxy. Hmmm and let us not also forget The Stones, they have to rank up there in a discussion of the best ever band.

Well I've read this thread, and i AM going to say......U2 are indeed BRILLIANT! Scott if you have any doubts about their abilities then you should go and see them live....WAYYY better than the studio stuff they do. I've been lucky enough to see almost every tour they've done......from the 'War' to the latest 'Vertigo' and i have to say, apart from a little slip in the 'Pop' era, they have been consistantly excellent, and this last gig was the best ever! Musically there are probably better guitar players or better drummers around, but lyrically there is no-one better than Bono. And as for passion...........the guy is GOD! How he even mangages to talk afterwards is beyond me....another Mr. 110%! It was 2 and a half hours of pure class.
I'm lucky enough to have seen most bands live, (alas not Zepplin) including Greenday, Dire Straights, The Darkness, Linkin Park (also excellent live), Metallica, and a host of other brilliant bands. But the only other 'band' to have me raving on their live performance were Queen. Freddie was a true performer, the like of which i fear we'll never see again.
Everyone will have their own opinions as to what makes a truely legendary group, but for me its the passion the performers bring to their gigs, and the magical feeling you get after seeing someone on stage enjoying what they do.

Soggy, nah. You're confusing his 'passion' for his love of 'centre of attention'. You see U2 interviewed, and who does the talking? Even when a question is directed at someone else in the band, he buts in and has his say. The guy is an egotistical a******* who instead of getting the publicity from concerts like Live 8, could easily afford to put £millions towards all the causes he preaches about. Anyway, I'm not getting in to a Bono rant lol. You're a U2 fan Soggy, and good for you... but from a neutral point, with no real feelings for bands, The Beatles just have to be up there at the top. This magical feeling you get at the end of a U2 concert is the same feeling any fan of a band would have after leaving their concert, so I'm not sure how that makes U2 the best band. Look at songs that appeal to all generations, and how many of their songs do... and the Beatles are miles ahead of any other band. Their songs are incredible... U2 produce good music, sometimes, but as I've said, if an unheard of group brought out a number of U2 songs, there's no way they'd get anywhere near the top 10. Queen also should be in the running ;D

Well, whatever!! this debate has been settled!!
"queen have spent 1,322 weeks in the chart compared to 1,293 weeks for the beatles." - guiness world records. elvis - 3rd and u2 - 4th.
editor bloke - "given that queen's chart career has been much shorter than those of the beatles and elvis, this is an incredible achievement."

Yes, Dream Theater! (hehe I mentioned the two best bands ever just there).
To the person that said Metallica, the only good music they put out was when they had Cliff Burton and dave Mustaine.

AC/DC. Been going years now. Still managing to attract fans form different generations. Best band from the 90's- The Stone Roses.
